This
project involved the first known use of a slip form paver to place
colored-stamped concrete on a full width street in the United States
. To determine if it was feasible to construct, WRMA, Inc. made two
trial runs before the first yard of concrete was placed on the project.
The first run proved to the colored concrete industry that the stamped
paving could be done and the second trial was completed to allow the
contractor to hone the required skills prior to construction. The
final result is a realistic looking stamped concrete brick that rides
better than a typical brick street.
When
the concept of placing the pavement with a slip form paver was first
explained to the color distributors they were skeptical and did not
believe it would work. To answer their many questions, WRMA, Inc.
invited the color manufacturer and the engineer to the demonstration
placement in their yard. There, they successfully showed how well
the colored stamped concrete could be constructed. In fact, the manufacturer
discovered that WRMA was able to place and finish the surface color
much more consistently than their current recommended process.
The
key to the process was the use of consistent and lower slump concrete,
which allowed for uniform setting so the stamping crews could make
steady progress with very little waiting time. In the past, this type
of work has been done with specialized crews at production rate of
only 15 cubic yards per day. With a slip form paver they are able
to place more than twice that much in one hour. The final proof can
now be admired along the Muskegon waterfront.
