Wayne
County to Utilize Young Paving Technology on Merriman Road Project
Open House to be held for public, officials, and media....
WHO:
· Wayne County
· Michigan Concrete Paving Association
WHAT: Open house to demonstrate the use of an innovative
paving technology, a thin concrete overlay, by Wayne County
on their Merriman Street project in Westland.
WHEN: Wednesday May 28, 2003
8:30 am to 10:00 am - Seminar
10:00 am to 3:00 pm - Site Visit
WHERE: Seminar - AMVETS Post 171, 1217 Merriman, Westland
Open House – Kroger Parking Lot, Corner of Michigan and
Merriman Roads
WHY: Engineers and road officials in Wayne County have
recently not been satisfied with the performance of some of
their traditional asphalt overlays.
The
Merriman Street project is an opportunity for the county to
try a newer paving technology that they hope will last longer
and perform better, decreasing inconvenience to the more than
29,000 motorists who travel the road daily. Engineers are paying
slightly more for the concrete overlay than they would for the
traditional asphalt repair, but anticipate getting a significantly
longer life out of the pavement. Engineers are hoping to implement
the concrete paving technology on future projects around the
county.
HOW:
The contractor, Six-S Construction of Waterford, will mill off
five inches of existing asphalt to reveal the seventy five year
old concrete road beneath. A four-inch concrete overlay will
then be placed over the old concrete pavement. The new overlay
is expected to last approximately 20 years; as opposed to the
ten years or less Wayne County engineers have been getting out
of recent asphalt overlays.
